Sunflower challenge
Hello everyone and welcome to my challenge badge!!
In many folkloric traditions, sunflowers are seen as symbols of good luck, optimism, and positive thoughts, which are things I will need while I start my new role as county commissioner. Their connection to the sun also signifying warmth, happiness, and life-giving energy, which I would like to share with all our wonderful volunteers and young members.
I thought it would be fun to have a competition in the county to see how tall we can grow some sunflowers and there will be a prize for the tallest sunflower.
Each section has a challenge in the program about planting things so we will use those and see if we can fill Cambs West with lovely bright sunflowers.
Once you have grown your sunflower and it has gotten as big as you think it’ll get, take a photo with it and with a measuring stick and send it to [email protected] and the the winner will get a visit to their unit from me to present the winning sunflower award!
Badges will arrive with us mid May, and will be £1 each but a purchase is not required to enter the competition.

Rainbows
Rainbows Nature badge
Clause three of the Nature badge suggests growing a plant.
Encourage the Rainbows to think about the place they will plant their sunflower when its big enough, or will the leave it in it’s pot? They can then make sure they keep their sunflower seeds watered and make sure it gets enough sunlight to thrive before when its big enough putting it outside.

Clause two asks you to grow a plant with a purpose. Sunflowers are great for bees, birds and other wildlife. Find out what animals like sunflowers and what stage of their growth different animals eat them.
Clause three asks you to design a plant care schedule. Plan out how often you are going to water your plant, how you are going to help it grow tall and where in the garden it will be best placed.
Guides
Guides - Plastic planting
UMA 3 pack three has a task to make an eco system by upcycling a plastic bottle. This is a great starting point to propagate your seeds before moving them to a bigger pot
Rangers
Rangers - Sow it grow it
UMA pack 1 has a task to create some seed balls, on the suggested list of seeds to use it includes sunflowers. Seeds balls are design to be used in areas where you know the land owner or have asked permission first, so you could use these in gardens or perhaps around your meeting place.
